BACK - The top portion of shoulders, loin, and hindquarters.

BALANCE -(1)Type--Shape or conformation. An orderly and pleasing arrangement of physical characteristics, so as to present a harmonious appearance. (2)Marking--Equal distribution of corresponding marking, such as color divisions of the Harlequin, or equal amounts of color on the cheeks of the Dutch. Equal distribution of color in the pattern and side markings of the Checkered Giant, English Spot, and Rhinelender.

BAND -An unbroken vertical circle of marking color around the body of Harlequin.

BANDING -A hair shaft having various colors. Normally associated with an agouti coat.

BANGS -The longer wool appearing at the front base of the ears and top of the head in some wool breeds.

BAR - A semicircle of marking color, running vertically on the sides or body of the Harlequin.

BARRED - (1)Elongated spots which should be round. (As found in the side marking of the Rhinelander or English Spot, or the cheek spots of the Rhinelander, English Spot, or Checkered Giant.) (2)Light colored streaks or bars on the front or rear feet.

BASE COLOR or UNDERCOLOR - The fur color at the base of the fur shaft nest to the skin.

BELLEARS - Ears that have large, heavy tips with distinctive fall or lop.

BELLY -The abdomen, from the last rib to pelvis, containening primarily the organ digestion

BELLY COLOR - The color on the underside of the rabbit extending from the forelegs to the crotch area.

BLAZE - The white marking found on the face of a Dutch. It should be medium wide and wedge shaped, covering the nose, whisker bed, and tapering up to the ears, where it joins the hair line. The blaze is to continue to the cheeks and should be well rounded and follow the jaw line after passing the whisker bed.

BLEMISH - Any defect or fault which detracts from the appearance.

BLOOM - The vitality and finish of a coat in good condition.

BOB TAIL - A tail noticeably shorter than normal. A disqualification from competition.

BOIL or ABSCESS - A localized area of inflammation caused by an infection under the skin, in a gland, or in a hair follicle. It may produce localized swelling, heat and redness. It is sometimes characterized by swollen, inflamed tissue, where pus gather. A disqualification from competition.

BONE - The term used to describe the skeletal structure of a rabbit.

BOOTS - The colored markings on the feet and legs of Pointed Pattern rabbits.

BOWED LEGS - May be applied to the fore & hind legs. Bent like a bow. Legs that are curved outwardly or inwardly from the middle. A disqualification from competition.

BREED - A class of domestic rabbits that reproduces itself with distinctive characteristic, such as fur, marking, shape, and size.

BREEDER - (1) Anyone who raises a breed or variety of rabbits which complies with the Standard of Perfection. (2)A rabbit used primarily to produce offspring.

BREEDING CERTIFICATE - A written certificate, issue by the owner of a stud buck, showing its pedigree and the date of breeding to a particular doe. It is issued as proof of the ancestry of the anticipated litter.

BRINDLE - An inter mixture of two colors without definite pattern.

BRINDLING - The longer tan tipped guard hairs carried up the flanks and hindquarter of Tan Pattern rabbits.

BROKEN COAT - Fur with guard hairs missing or broken, exposing the undercoat. A coat that is affected by molt, exposing the undercoat.

BUCK - An intact male rabbits.

BUCK TEETH - see wolf teeth. A disqualification in competition.

BULL DOG HEAD - A short, broad, bold head, with a definite masculine appearance.

BUTTERFLY - A nose marking found on some marked breeds and Broken varieties. The wing positions cover the whisker bed and upper lip, with the body or nose fork extending up the center of the face.

BUTTING TEETH - A form of malocclusion, where the incisors meet evenly, without the upper incisors overlapping the lower incisors in proper structure. A disqualification from competition.

ADULT - A mature rabbit of breeding age. For show qualification see senior

AGOUTI PATTERN - A hair Shaft that has three or more bands of color, with a definite break between each color. It usually has dark slate at the base, with two or more alternating light or dark bands of color, which if further interspersed with contrasting guard hairs. The head, feet, and ear usually have ticking. Eye circles, belly, under jaws, underside of tail, and triangle are much lighter (may be white for some cases) and do not carry ticking.

ALBINO - A white rabbit with pink eyes caused by a recessive gene.

ARCH - The Gentle curvature of the spine, extending from the neck (or shoulders in some breeds) to the rear of the rabbit. This is the best observed by viewing the animal side profile.

AWN FLUFF - The soft, crimped, intermediate wool fibers ending with a straight tip. A type of wool fiber describe in the Giant Angora standard.

AWN HAIR - The strong, straight, guard hair protruding above the undercoat in the Giant Angora.

Biting and Aggression

Every rabbit has the potential to inflict a very painful bite or to shred human skin with strong legs and sharp claws. This kind of aggression is, almost always, a last resort after their human failed to recognize earlier communication of displeasure (see Bunny speak 101).

Reasons Buns Bite

Fear. A frightened rabbit will lash out at predators who come near in an attempt to inflict enough damage to the pursuer to repel the attack. These are strong instincts and a frightened bun will not take the time to determine if that hand that is swooping toward them is their beloved owner or a predator.
Blind Spot. Rabbits have a blind spot in their vision. They cannot see directly in front of them. If you look at a bun's head, the eyes are on the sides, allowing a wider field of vision. When people stick their hand in a bun's cage, they usually stick their hand toward the bun's head. . . in the blind spot. All the rabbit knows is that, without warning, something has touched them. They, instinctively lash out. Always warn your bun before approaching them and, better yet, make sure your hands are not in their blind spot.

Pecking Order. Rabbits in colonies develop very strict hierarchies. Much of this is achieved non-violently, but nips are frequently part of establishing who's in charge. If your bun feels that you are trying to get "too big for your britches," they may bite you to remind you that they are, indeed, in charge.
Sexual Behavior. Nipping is often part of the mating ritual. So, if little Pookie is circling your feet and nipping ankles and hands, consider yourself "wooed."
Pain and Illness. Rabbits in physical distress will bite. Any sick or injured animal is dangerous and should be approached as such. Sick and injured animals should always be handled with gloves and towels.

Strangers in the Warren. If a stranger attempts to be too familiar too quickly, then Thump may nip a finger in warning. Rabbits love the familiar and they often require time to accept change. This includes new people in their lives.
In many of the cases where people have been bitten, frankly they have deserved it. Children who harass the cute little bunnies in the cage by sticking their fingers in the bun's face over and over deserve a little nip.

Beberapa antibiotik dilaporkan berbahaya kepada arnab. Walaupun ia membantu melawan jangkitan bakteria, ianya membawa kesan sekunder seperti nephrotoxicity atau masalah gastro usus yang boleh membawa masalah kepada maut. Dysbiosis** sering diperhatikan; Flora bakteria usus yang hadir secara semula jadi dalam cecum dan usus arnab terganggu. Keadaan ini membolehkan bakteria patogenik, sepertiClostridium spp, berkembang dalam saluran GI dan untuk menghasilkan toksin berbahaya.

Berikut adalah senarai antibiotik yang telah dilaporkan berbahaya untuk digunakan atau maut bagi arnab anda.

Sila cetak dan simpan di tempat yang selamat, tunjukkan kepada doktor haiwan dalam kes beliau mahu memberikan antibiotik kepada arnab anda.

Wryneck, a serious problem in pet rabbits, is a mild to severe twisting of the

head that causes incoordination and sometimes total incapacitation. Wryneckis most often the result of a bacterial infection of the inner car and is not a true

neck problem. It can be treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs,

but the outlook with these cases is always guarded.

Unfortunately, wryneck often results from abscessation of the inner car (and

Tolong jangan salahkan Tim ye kalau I terlanjur kata dicatatan blog ini. Kenapa di masa yang terlampau hampa ini saya masih boleh ingat lagu Burung Kakak Tua? Maklumlah, ada Pedigree dan Tattoo ni boleh jual lebih mahal….BOHONG!

Renung sekejap…..KUALITI bukan KUANTITI brader……Sekali lagi kita kembali ke Standard Of Perfection (dah bosan ni nak di ulang lagi macam tak habis2)….Tak pe, kita belajar slow slow skit……….

Kenapa seekor arnab dijual RM 150 lepas itu yang lain RM 500? Arnab RM 150 kalau ada pedigree terus naik harga ke RM 500 macam upgrade KAP CHAI ke SUPER BIKE….BOHONG!

Walaupun arnab impot pun ada beza KUALITINYA! Tolong jangan lupa kata2 hikmat ini boleh tolong supaya duit tidak senang berlari dari dompet….

Saya pun sudah bosan nak menaip panjang lebar ni – sila rujuk kepada catatan yang sudah lampau ini - http://truluvrabbitry.com/2010/11/19/the-reason-behind-the-tattoo/. Kalau perlu, silalah rujuk kepada kamus ye.

Akan tetapi jari2 I rasa gatal sikit. Mari, saya tolong taipkan sebanyak mungkin.

Fungsi tattoo ini bukannya untuk mendapatkan lebih duit. Malah seperti KAD PENGENALAN dalam dompet mu sayang….

Kenapa warganegara ini diberi nombor unik? Kerana semua orang ini kan spasial? Ia digelar KAD PENGENALAN. Jom kita buangkan perkataan KAD ia menjadi PENGENALAN! BINGO, itu lah fungsi TATTOO!

Ia dijadikan pengenalan untuk si ARNAB. Kalau ikut ARBA, nak masuk pertandingan ataupun nak didaftar arnab itu, kena ada PEDIGREE dan TATTOO. Pedigree untuk menyatakan arnab itu adalah TULEN kerana PEDIGREE (surat beranak) mencatitkan salahsilah keluarga 3 generasi. Rabbit Terms

When you hear rabbit people talk, you may hear things like - buck, doe, kits, kindle, lagomorph, variety, etc. Is this a new langauage? No..., It's rabbit speak.

Here are the meanings of some different rabbit terms...

ARBA - American Rabbit Breeders Association

BIS - Best in Show

BOB - Best of Breed

BOS - Best of Opposite Sex

BOSV - Best of Oppostie Sex of Variety

BOV - Best of Variety

Broken - When the solid coat color of a rabbit has white patches or large white areas.

Buck - un-altered male rabbit.

Butterfly - A dark colored area around the rabbits nose- on a broken colored rabbit- that resembles a butterfly.

Charlie - A Broken patterned animal with less than 10% color on white fur.

Condition - the physical shape a rabbit is in.

Culling - When you remove less desirable rabbits from your herd, either by selling them or killing them, so you do not breed down undesirable qualities in your rabbits.

Dewlap - Thick folds of furred skin under a rabbits chin, mostly on does.

Doe - un-altered female rabbit.

Eye circle - Even markings around both eyes.

Faults - Imperfections on a rabbit that bring down the number of points a rabbit may win for show, but does not disqualify it from showing.

Fly back - After brushing the coat in the opposite direction it is going in, it falls back in place quickly.

Four Class - Show term for rabbits weighing less than 9 lbs at senior weight.

Guard hair - the longer, coarser hair of the coat which offers protection to the undercoat and providing wearing quality and sheen to the coat.

Inbreeding - mating closely related pairs of rabbits such as mother to son.

Junior - A show term for rabbits under 6 months of age.

Kindling - When a rabbit gives birth to babies.

Kits - A baby rabbit.

Lagomorph - The technical name for a rabbit

Lapin - The french word for "rabbit".

Linebreeding- mating rabbits that are descended from the same family line, but are related several generations back, such as first cousins or uncle to niece.

Litter - Baby rabbits born to the same mother at the same time.

Malocclusion - An inherited defect where the upper and lower jaws do not let the teeth meet, allowing either the bottom or top teeth to grow long and unevenly out of the rabbits mouth.

Molt - When a rabbit sheds it's hair.

Nest box- Where a doe kindles its kits.

Outbreeding - Mating two totally unrelated rabbits.

Pair - A buck and a doe.

Palpate - To feel a pregnant does underside to determine whether or not she is pregnant, usually not less than 12 or more than 14 days into the pregnancy.

Pedigree - A chart showing the descendants of a rabbit, three to four generations back.

Rabbitry - A place where domestic rabbits are raised or kept.

Rollback - After brushing the coat in the opposite direction it is going in, it falls back in place slowly.

Saddle - The rounded colored portion at the rear of a dutch rabbit.

Senior - A rabbit that is over 6 months of age or older.

Six class rabbits - A show term for rabbits over 9 lbs. at senior weight.

Smut - Slate grey fur that is not supposed to be on a standard color for a rabbit.

Tattoo - a set of numbers and or letters tattooed into a rabbits left ear for identification.

Trio - One buck and two does.

Type - Denotes body conformation or the shape of a particular breed of rabbit.

Variety - A rabbit's color.

Weaning - The process of getting a baby rabbit to go from drinking its mother's milk to eating solid food.

It begins with the free rabbit that your friend offers you. He thought it was a male, and was surprised to find that he now owns seven rabbits instead of one.

So you get the Rabbit Starter Kit (150.00~).
Then you buy all the rabbit books that the pet store has, along with worth of Rabbit Treats and chew toys. (75.00~)

Then you find out that the books were written in 1950 and are mostly wrong. The Rabbit Treat is too rich for them. The starter kit is full of things like alfalfa and cedar shavings that are bad for rabbits. The bunny ignores the chew toys - what they really want is paper and cardboard.

You also discover that the cage you bought is inappropriate for rabbits and just about any other small animal. Moved by guilt, you purchase a better cage with a nice pan underneath (+65.00).

You hear that rabbits can be litter-trained, so you buy a litter pan and kitty litter. (10.00~) The clay litter turns out to be not so good, so you replace it with a flushable litter (20.00~).
The paper and cardboard cause intestinal blockage which requires surgery (another 100.00~).

And their nails grow too long and you try to cut them, but the bunny amputates one of your fingers, so you pay a vet to do it (25.00~ for nail clipping; 75.00 for YOUR doctor visit).

You discover that you have one of those rabbits which need their teeth trimmed, too! (15.00~+)
Then he pees all over and humps your foot, so you pay to have him neutered (75.00~).

Then he discovers your computer and chews through the power cable and printer cord (15.00~).
He ruins your antique furniture and chews up the baseboards (~ whole lot).

It turns out that SHE is a HE. He starts digging in the wall to wall carpeting, creating a huge hole. He eats the stuff underneath, requiring another trip to the vet for surgery. The landlord finds out and you are forced to leave, forgoing your security deposit ( 300.00 and up!). That's not mentioning the new security deposit and moving costs....

The phone goes dead and you see the last of the cord disappearing into bunny's mouth. He eats the phone book for dessert. You get smart and you rabbit-proof the house ($~100-).

And then he jumps up on your lap and rubs your nose with his. "Awww," you say, "It's all worth it."

What is a Pedigree?

A pedigree is used by rabbit breeders to record the parentage of rabbits of a specific breed and to show that a specific rabbit is purebred. If you ever want to get a rabbit registered and grand championed you will need a pedigree.

How to Use These Pedigrees

For those of you new to filling out a pedigree here is some information you might find helpful. Blank Generic Rabbit Pedigree: Center Top under Rabbit Pedigree has a place for you to put whatever breed of rabbit that pedigree is for To the left is a place for you to put your information The first box on the left in the center is to put the information of the baby rabbit (kit) Name is the name of the rabbit. Many people use their rabbitry name and then a name for the kit. Ex. ABOB's Midnight Sky (ABOB is the abrieviation for my rabbitry A Basket of Blessings) You could put your name (ex. Dawn's Midnight Sky) if you don't have a rabbitry name. Alot of people do even if they have a rabbitry name. You could just put your name and leave the rest blank for the new owner to fill in. I do this with kits I am selling (ex. ABOB's ____________________________) Then the color of the rabbit comes next

The ear # of the rabbit - you can leave this blank and let the new owner give one later if you don't want to assign ear numbers right now. This is a means of identifying the rabbit for future reference. It also helps when selling rabbits of the same color. If I have say 2 torts and 5 black torts tattoing them with an ear # will help me to eventually tell them apart when I go to sell them. Also if anyone has a question about a rabbit I sold I can look up the information on that rabbit by looking up it's ear #. Next is the DOB or date of birth Then the sex - buck (boy) or doe (girl) Wt is the weight of the rabbit. Unless the rabbit is an adult (6 months) I leave this blank Reg. # is for registered numbers & GC # is for Grand Champion numbers so don't fill this out unless the rabbit has them. The new owner will fill those out later if they apply. Winnings: Legs - the number of wins a rabbit has. When a rabbit wins its class and there is enough competitors they win a leg. If a rabbit gets 3 legs and is registered, you can apply to have the rabbit Grand Championed. You must be an ARBA member to do this. The next two boxes are for the kit rabbit's parents. Sire is the dad and Dam is the mom. Then there are the grandparents and great grandparents of the kit. When you have filled in all this information you have a full pedigree. All the rabbits must be purebred rabbits of the same breed. Check it over with for any corrections and then you sign it at the bottom under: This pedigree is correct to the best of my knowledge.

Rabbit Pedigree question?
On a pedigree, you are right, there are all spaces like that. The breeder is supposed to fill in thecolor and weight (in pounds and ounces) and they are supposed to include the Ear Number (the number tattoed in the rabbit's left ear). What you were referring to as legs, doesn't refer to describing the rabbit's actual legs. It describes that rabbit's winnings. A rabbit shown in a class with at least 5 rabbits and with at least 3 different breeders, if that rabbit wins its class it gets a "leg" or certificate saying that it won a first place. If a rabbit wins 3 legs it can apply for a Grand Champion.

That blank space you referred to could either be for the rabbit's name or for the rabbit's ear number. Usually there is a space for each. You might check that your rabbit has an ear number in its left ear and record that. And make sure you record that on the pedigree if it isn't on there. If it is the name, then put whatever name you want to call the rabbit in the space, since you do own the rabbit now and it is your right to name it. But do not change anything regarding the ancestors. The person who sold you the rabbit signed that pedigree stating that it was true.

"People that raise a lot of rabbits occasionally come across a doe that eats her young. If this is her first or second litter, she may be forgiven for she knoweth not what she doeth. But if she eats babies with each litter, there's no sense in breeding her anymore. There is no known cause or cure. The problem is that rabbits do not have the same motherly instinct as dogs or cats who will protect their young. Some does will simply neglect their young and let them die. The majority of does, however, once they get the knack of things, will take care of their babies to the extent that their limited instinct will allow them. For instance, baby rabbits must remain in their nest box and not come out of it until they're ready because the mother will not take them back into the box.

As far as any rabbit eating a baby rabbit, sometimes it will think that a baby rabbit is a mouse or something and destroy it. Sometimes stress may cause a rabbit to eat its young. Some think that there is something lacking in the diet. In case this is so, offer some alfalfa hay occasionally. If the doe eats the babies as she is giving birth, I think it is because she doesn't know what is coming out of her and will eat the babies as she would her afterbirth. This is caused by inexperience being a mother, though, and she should be given another opportunity.

In any case, do not tolerate a doe eating the young after her second or third litter."
